Belizean author Zoila Ellis recently visited St. Catherine’s Academy for a Meet the Author session centred around her book, The Saltpickers and Other Caribbean Stories.
During the session, students had the opportunity to hear Ellis speak about her work and the themes woven throughout her stories, which span the Caribbean, Central America, England, and the United States. Her writing explores the connections between people, nature, history, and belief, while bringing to life a vivid cast of characters with warmth, honesty, and sharp insight.
The talk highlighted the importance of Caribbean storytelling and the role literature plays in preserving memory, culture, and community across generations. Students engaged enthusiastically with the author, sharing their favourite stories and asking thoughtful questions about her writing process, characters, and inspirations. The event, organised by literature teacher Ms Aguilar, concluded with a book signing and provided a meaningful opportunity for Ellis to connect with and inspire young readers.
